Habitat: dry, narrow ledges of 30 to 60-foot high x 1/2 mile long, north-facing diorite cliff ... Shaded by surrounding forest, and trees and shrubs on the cliff itself including Picea glauca, Thuja occidentalis, Betula papyrifera, Acer spicatum, Sorbus decora, and Alnus viridis. Associates include Woodsia ilvensis, Dryopteris fragrans, Polypodium virginianum.
