Habitat: In the understory of a mesic oak-aspen woodland ... Associated with Viburnum rafinesquianum, V. lentago, Prunus virginiana, Corylus cornuta, C. americana.
Description: Just starting to flower now; C. chrysocarpa flowered 1 week earlier. A shrub with 3 stems; the largest 3.3 m tall, and 8 cm basal dia. Stamens ca 10; anthers white. Simple thorns very long (to 9 cm); compound thorns also present.
