Habitat: in moss mats and thin soil over bedrock atop east-facing, vasalt cliffs and outcrops rising 50-60 feet above the lake. Low, wind-swept vegetation. In full sun. Associates include Achillea millefolium, Saxifraga virginiensis, Corydalis sempervirens, Euphrasia hudsoniana, Fragaria virginiana, Heuchera richardsonii, Potentilla norvegica, Danthonia spicata, Potentilla tridentata, Poa sp., Agrostis scabra.
