thicket along [river] ... In partial shade of Fraxinus pennsylvanica. Climbing on vegetation up to 10 feet into branches of shrubs and small trees. Associates include Viburnum lentago, Spiraea alba, Rhamnus alnifolia, Thalictrum dasycarpum, Onoclea sensibilis, Soligao gigantea, Stachys palustris, Cirsium muticum, Carex stricta.
