Habitat:
Mesic aspen-birch and wet-mesic aspen-fir forest complex. Under canopy openings and disturbed ground on slopes. Associates: Populus tremuloides and Betula papyrifera in the overstory; Abies balsamea, Acer spicatum, and Corylus cornuta subsp. cornuta in the understory; Eurybia macrophyllla, Petasites frigidus var. palmatus, Cornus canadensis, Fragaria virginiana, Aralia nudicaulis, Osmunda claytonia, Phegopteris connectilis, Arisaema triphyllum, Lathyrus venosus, Actaea rubra, Gallium asprellum, Rubus idaeus var. strigosus, Athyrium flix-femina var. angustum, Bromus ciliatus, and Equisetum sylvaticum in the ground cover.
