Habitat: In dry bedrock oak woodland near a powerline corridor. Soil substrate is somewhat excessively drained, shallow loamy sand with abundant cobble coarse fragments. Bedrock is near the surface and community was burned in the past. Specimen growing on a 2% upper slope under a canopy and mid-story layer of Quercus rubra. Associates in the ground cover include Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum, Eurybia macrophylla, Danthonia spicata, Carex cf. pensylvanica, Poa pratensis subsp. pratensis, Pleurozium schreberi, Polytrichum spp., and Cladonia spp.
