In a forested peatland white cedar swamp with abundant hummocks and hollows. Surrounding soil substrate is mostly peat moss overlying mucky peat. 4 cm surface water and pH 6.9. Growing on Sphagnum hummock under Abies balsamea. Canopy dominated by Thuja occidentalis. Associates of Carex trisperma, Carex disperma, Carex leptalea, Rhododendron groenlandicum, Alnus incana subsp. rugosa, Acer rubrum, Cornus sericea, Phegopteris connectilis, Maianthemum trifolium, and Trientalis borealis.
