Habitat: rich lowland hardwood and maple-basswood forest on floor of narrow valley between 180-foot bluffs. Canopy interrupted to closed, dominated by Tilia americana, with occasional Acer saccharum, Fraxinus nigra, Ulmus americana, and U. thomasii. Deep, rich alluvial silt. Associates include Laportea canadensis, Urtica dioica, Rudbeckia laciniata, Hydrophyllum virginianum, Geum canadense, Hybanthus concolor, Carex woodii, C. hirtifolia ... valley floor, often in disturbed areas including near old trout-rearing ponds.
