Occasional on Sphagnum hummocks in forested peatland. Under broken canopy of black spruce and white cedar recruiting into patchy subcanopy with Carex magellanicum.
Associates include Rhododendron groenlandicum, Vaccinium oxycoccus, Vaccinium vitis-idaea, Maianthemum canadense, Sarracenia purpurea, Maianthemum trifolium, Chamaedaphne calyculata.
