Occasional in partially shaded edge of isolated rock outcrop habitat within mesic hardwood forest. Growing in lichen/bryophyte patches on bedrock.
Associates: Vaccinium angustifolia, Schizachne purpurescens, Oryzopsis asperifolia, Maianthemum canadense.
