Growing from moss hummocks and peat in moderate shade and in small opening of tamarack and wt. cedar.

Assoc. include Rhamnus alnifolia, Rubus pubescens, Lonicera villosa, Betula pumila, Carex lacustris, Equisetum fluviatile, Caltha palustris, Symphyotrichum puniceum, Chelone glabra, Iris versicolor, Sium suave, Impatiens capensis.

Occasional small groups of plants flowering and fruiting.
