Habitat: Fairly rugged forested moraine ... on rather moist, and moderately steep, 20- to 30-foot high slopes of a ravine along a small stream ... Canopy of mature Picea glauca, Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, Populus tremuloides, P. balsamifera, Fraxinus nigra, and Pinus resinosa. Understory of Corylus cornuta, Acer spicatum, and Abies balsamea. Sandy-gravel substrate. Often in moss mats. Associates include Viola selkirkii, Circaea alpina, Mitella nuda, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Osmorhiza longistylis, Carex pedunculata, C. deweyana.
