Locality: United States, Minnesota, Cook, Superior National Forest. Along the Poplar River in rugged bedrock terrain three miles northwest of Lutsen, just upstream from the Lutsen Mountains Ski Area. NW1/4 of NE1/4 Sec. 20, Superior National Forest

Habitat: Common in large peatland complex bordering the river. Deep peat. Continuous carpets of Sphagnum mosses. Large trees in the canopy with Picea mariana in poor black spruce-tamarack swamp / bog, and smaller (~stunted) trees in poor shrub shore fen dominated by Myrica gale and Chamaedaphne calyculata. Specimen is from the lower branches of a 20-foot tall, 4-inch D.B.H. tree growing in the poor shrub shore fen zone.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Ledum groenlandicum, Andromeda glaucophylla, Vaccinium myrtilloides, Alnus incana, Carex trisperma.
