Sandy rocky soil in setting ~6 feet above the creek and ~20 feet from the bank. Partial shade beneath sparse canopy of maturing Populus balsamifera. One ~20-foot tall tree, ~3 inches D.B.H. Few flowers present. Anthers pink in tight buds, as are bracts below new leaf/stem growth. Thorns to ~2 inches long. Several small suckers at base of tree.
