Habitat: Scattered small clumps in shallow soil over diabase bedrock and amongst rubble from portions of the bedrock that are disintegrating in place. Shaded below short Quercus rubra, Populus tremuloides, and Amelanchier sp.
Associated Species: Additional associates include seedlings of Acer rubrum and Pinus strobus, also Diervilla lonicera, Rosa acicularis, Cornus rugosa, Schizachne purpurascens, Aster macrophyllus, Antennaria neglecta.
