Habitat: Local, several dozen plants in shallow loamy soil on margins and crevices of quite local basalt/diabase outcrops and in associated rock rubble on steep mid portion of 250-foot, east-facing slope. Floricanes low-arching, to 3 feet long (most <30 inches, many <18 inches). Primocanes semi-erect to erect. Partial to full shade under rather open canopy of Acer rubrum, Quercus rubra, and Populus grandidentata. Understory patchy, composed of Acer spicatum, A. rubrum, A. saccharum, Quercus rubra, Ostrya virginiana, and Populus grandidentata.
Associated Species: Associates include Diervilla lonicera, Viburnum rafinesquianum, Lonicera canadensis, Aster macrophyllus, Lathyrus ochroleucus, Schizachne purpurascens.
