Habitat:
Uncommon in old growth northern hardwood forest dominated by Acer saccharum and Tilia americana, with occasional Acer rubrum, Quercus rubra, and Betula allegheniensis. Understory of Acer saccharum, Ostrya virginiana, and Abies balsamea. Single-stemmed shrubs, to 7 feet tall. Small loose patch here in rocky loamy soil on a gradual east-facing slope.
