Uncommon and local in mature maple-basswood forest. Canopy dominated by Acer saccharum, Tilia americana, and Quercus rubra. Understory mostly Acer saccharum and Ostrya virginiana. On gentle south-facing slope above the crest of the ridge. Rocky loamy soil, shallow to bedrock.
Additional associates include Uvularia grandiflora, U. sessilifolia, Osmorhiza claytonii, Aralia nudicaulis, Viola pubescens, Aster macrophyllus, Actaea pachypoda, Carex pensylvanica, C. deweyana, Schizachne purpurascens, Dirca palustris.
