Habitat:
Frequent quite locally in mature maple-basswood forest atop 150-foot ridge. Forms loose patches near basaltic outcrops beneath canopy dominated by Acer saccharum, Tilia americana, and Quercus rubra. Understory mostly Acer saccharum and Ostrya virginiana. Level to gentle south-facing mesic settings above the crest of the ridge. Low shrubs, to ~24 inches tall here.

Associates include Parthenocissus inserta, Toxicodendron rydbergii, Solidago flexicaulis, Aquilegia canadensis, Hepatica americana, Carex deweyana, C. pensylvanica, Schizachne purpurascens.
