Habitat: Local atop an 80-foot granite knob. Occasional to very locally abundant in bedrock woodland dominated by rather short Picea glauca and Pinus resinosa. Gentle to fairly steep southeast-facing slope atop 40-foot cliffs. Seedlings, saplings, and canopy trees, to ~30 feet tall and 9 inches D.B.H. Smaller individuals are heavily browsed.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, Pinus strobus, Vaccinium angustifolium, V. myrtilloides, Diervilla lonicera, Danthonia spicata, Carex tonsa, Lycopodium clavatum, Melampyrum lineare.
