Habitat:
Local on cool, mesic to quite moist, east-facing basalt cliffs in a narrow, 100-foot deep river gorge. Occasional in crevices and moss mats on the mostly inaccessible mid- to upper portion of a 60-foot high cliff face. Shaded by the gorge walls and by Thuja occidentalis, Abies balsamea, Pinus strobus, Acer spicatum, and Betula papyrifera growing atop the gorge.
Associated Species:
Associates include Cystopteris fragilis, C. bulbifera, Woodsia alpina, Campanula rotundifolia, Prenanthes alba, Aquilegia canadensis.
