United States, Minnesota, Carlton, Along the South Fork Nemadji River in level to locally quite rugged forested terrain 2.5 miles north-northwest of Holyoke, 16 miles east-northeast of the town of Moose Lake; ~1/3-mile upstream from the Highway 23 bridge. NE1/4 of SW1/4 Sec. 6

Habitat:
Local along a small ravine on the gently-sloping upper portion of a 90-foot slope (which is quite steep below) above the river. Aspect varies from south to west. Patchy to sparse canopy of immature (~25-year old) Populus tremuloides. Understory with scattered Picea glauca, Quercus macrocarpa, and Betula papyrifera. Mesic red clay. Sparse to rather dense patches covering several acres. Understory shrubs / small trees, 2-10 feet tall.

Additional associates include Diervilla lonicera, Cornus racemosa, Viburnum rafinesquianum, Corylus cornuta, Pteridium aquilinum.
