Locality: United States, Minnesota, Carlton, Along the South Fork Nemadji River in level to locally quite rugged forested terrain 2.5 miles north-northwest of Holyoke, 16 miles east-northeast of the town of Moose Lake; ~1/3-mile upstream from the Highway 23 bridge. NE1/4 of SW1/4 Sec. 6

Habitat: Local on gently-sloping upper portion of a 90-foot south-facing slope (which is quite steep below) above the river. Infrequent in aspen forest dominated by immature (~25-year old) Populus tremuloides. Mesic clay substrate. Scattered understory trees, 3-15 feet tall and to 2 inches D.B.H. Red fruits.
Associated Species: Additional associates include Corylus cornuta, Crataegus macracantha, Lonicera hirsuta, Viburnum rafinesquianum, V. lentago, V. trilobum, Prunus virginiana, Cornus racemosa, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Hepatica americana, Pteridium aquilinum.
