ID Remarks: Morphology and basidiospores agree with descriptions of this species, e.g., H. Knudsen and J. Vesterholt, eds., Funga Nordica (2012) and Miller and Miller (2006), North American Mushrooms, but colors of the fresh and dried fruiting bodies in this collection are much darker and the white universal veil is much thicker and more persistent than reported for this species. Sequence needed to confirm identification.

Description: FIELD DESCRIPTION OF AGARICS & BOLETES Collection No.: DJM 1981 Name: Cortinarius aff. alboviolaceus (Fr.) Kumm. (#16) Locality, Date: Marsh Vista Trail, Big Bog State Recreation Area, Beltrami Co., MN, 20 Aug. 2015. Habitat: On ground in needle duff and Cornus canadensis under spruce and poplar. PILEUS: Shape Convex. Breadth 4.5-4.8 cm. Color Margin light purplish Gray; disc light Brown to brownish Orange. Changes None. Surface Appressed fibrillose. Flesh: Consistency Firm. Thickness 5 mm. Color Light grayish Brown. Changes None. Odor Earthy. Taste Mild, not distinctive. HYMENOPHORE: Attachment Uncinate. Length 7 mm. Color Moderate Brown. Changes None. Edges (Color & Shape) Concolorous, somewhat wavy. Spacing & pattern Subdistant, separate. Lamellulae Present; 1-2 sets; inner ends truncate. STIPE: Shape Clavate. Size 7.0-7.5 x 1.1 cm. Surface Dry, fibrillose. Color Very pale Gray above, dingy whitish below. Changes None. Flesh color Light grayish Brown above with a hint of Purple, mostly dingy light yellowish Brown; very wormy. Flesh color changes None. VEIL: Cortina with orange spores on stipe apex. Universal Veil: Thick, whitish, sheathing lower stipe. SPORE DEPOSIT COLOR: Moderate Brown. EXSICCATAE color: Pileus near light grayish Brown, but darker and near dark Brown on disc. Stipe surface light grayish yellowish Brown and whitish toward base. N.B. Colors from K.L. Kelly and D.B. Notes: MICROSCOPIC ANALYSIS: Basidiospores from spore print (x 1250, 5% KOH or Melzer’s reagent) elliptical, yellowish Brown, verrucose, covered with small warts evenly distributed over the surface, dextrinoid, profile: (8.2-) 9.2 – 9.7 (-10.4) x 5.6 – 6.1 µm (n = 11).
