ID Remarks: As in DJM 1981 morphology and basidiospores agree with descriptions of this species, e.g., H. Knudsen and J. Vesterholt, eds., Funga Nordica (2012) and Miller and Miller (2006), North American Mushrooms, but colors of the dried fruiting bodies in this collection are much darker than reported for C. alboviolaceus, and the white universal veil is much thicker and more persistent than reported. Sequence needed to confirm identification.

Description: FIELD DESCRIPTION OF AGARICS & BOLETES Collection No.: DJM 2007 Name: Cortinarius aff. alboviolaceus (#16) Locality, Date: Marsh Vista Trail, Big Bog State Recreation Area, Beltrami Co., MN, 17 Sep. 2015. Habitat:On ground in needle duff and grass under jack pine, white spruce and poplar. Habit: Single or cespitose. For description see DJM 1981, details the same except as follows. PILEUS: Surface Margin of young fruitbody has membranous veil that matches universal veil covering lower stipe. Cortina remnants also on pileus margin. STIPE: VEIL: Cortina on stipe apex. SPORE DEPOSIT COLOR: Grayish Brown to moderate and dark Brown. EXSICCATAE color: As in DJM 1981 color is much darker than reported in Funga Nordica (2012) for C. alboviolaceus. N.B. Colors from K.L. Notes: MICROSCOPIC ANALYSIS: Basidiospores from spore print (x 1250, 5% KOH) elliptical, yellowish Brown, verrucose with small warts, profile: (9.0-) 9.2–10.2 x 5.3–6.1 µm (n = 10).
