Habitat: in disturbed (heavily past grazed) floodplain forest. Interrupted anopy dominated by Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Tilia americana & Quercus macrocarpa, with occasional Juglans cinerea. Dark gray alluvial silt. Associates include Acer negundo, Prunus virginiana, juniperus virginiana, Viburnum lentago, Zanthoxylum americanum, Rudbeckia laciniata, Laportea canadensis, Celtis occidentalis, Erythronium albidum, Carex sprengellii, Matteuccia struthiopteris.
