Local on a northwest- to north-facing, 50- to 100-foot cliff, on the upper slope of a steep-sided, 120-foot bedrock knob. In crevices and on narrow ledges on the lower half of this rather dry cliff. Infrequent in thinly-bedded Rove Formation sedimentary bedrock that forms the lower half of this stair-step cliff; occasional on the overlying diabase. Partial sun to full shade due to the aspect of the cliff, also from Betula cordifolia, Picea glauca, and Abies balsamea growing on nearby ledges.
Associates include Dryopteris fragrans, Polypodium virginianum, Campanula rotundifolia.
