Uncommon and local, a few small clumps on the rather exposed, dry-mesic, narrow middle ledges of a 50-foot, northwest-facing gabbro cliff that rises out of the lake. Rooted in thin organic detritus amongst lichens. Shaded by the aspect of cliff until late afternoon.
Associates include Carex deflexa, Polypodium virginianum, Dryopteris fragrans, and seedlings of Picea mariana, Betula cordifolia, Sorbus decora, Thuja occidentalis, Abies balsamea, Pinus strobus.
