Habitat:
On the lower portion of an extremely steep, 220-foot, south-facing slope above the west end of Vernon Lake. Infrequent and local, small clumps in thin soil on rather dry, narrow, lower ledges of a 30- to 80-foot basalt cliff. Partial shade of Thuja occidentalis, Picea glauca, and Betula papyrifera growing at the base of the cliff.

Associates include Solidago nemoralis, Woodsia ilvensis, Saxifraga virginiensis, Campanula rotundifolia, Achillea millefolium, Polygonum cilinode, Potentilla norvegica, Oenothera villosa, Carex foenea, Poa glauca, Rubus strigosus, Ribes oxyacanthoides.
