Local on the steep upper slope of a 130-foot ridge northeast of Brule Bay. Scattered clumps on narrow mossy ledges on lower to mid portions of 30- to 70-foot, dry to mesic, north-facing, rhyolite (and diabase?) cliff. Partial sun to full shade beneath Picea mariana, Abies balsamea, Thuja occidentalis, Pinus strobus, Betula cordifolia, and Sorbus decora.
Associates include Betula cordifolia saplings, Cladina spp. lichens, and Woodsia ilvensis, Carex deflexa, Campanula rotundifolia.
