Locality: United States, Minnesota, Cook, Butterwort Cliffs Scientific & Natural Area, Along the Lake Superior shore in rugged bedrock terrain seven miles west-southwest of Grand Marais. T61N R1W E1/2 of SW1/4 of SE1/4 Sec. 32 (irregular Section)

Habitat: Occasional in small seepage wetlands. Partial shade of Betula papyrifera, B. cordifolia, Alnus viridis, Acer spicatum, Sorbus decora, and Salix discolor. Moist, shallow, rocky, organic soil on a narrow bedrock terrace just inland of the basalt shoreline shelf. In sedge meadow, shrub swamp, and moist aspen woodland settings. Robust plants, to ~9 feet tall.
Associated Species: Associates include Galium asprellum, Rubus pubescens, Equisetum sylvaticum, Impatiens capensis, Physocarpus opulifolius, Cornus stolonifera, Carex media, Calamagrostis canadensis.
