Local, scattered plants in shallow and rather dry rocky soil over basalt on a moderately steep, south-facing slope. Full sun to partial shade of Sorbus decora, Thuja occidentalis, and Betula papyrifera in ecotonal area ~35-40 feet above the lake and just inland from the exposed lakeshore bedrock shelf. Growing with dense Diervilla lonicera.
