Habitat: Frequent on the margins of granite outcrops, in level to gently-rolling terrain east of the Mississippi River. Forming robust clumps in shallow loamy soil over bedrock. Degraded oak savanna setting. Full sun to partial shade of Populus tremuloides, Quercus macrocarpa, and Q. ellipsoidalis.
