Occasional in degraded woodland, especially along hiking trails, in level to gently-rolling terrain east of the Mississippi River. Sandy loam, often rather shallow to the granite bedrock which is exposed at several locations in the park. Typically occurring with the much more abundant Lonicera xbella and L. tatarica. Partial shade beneath Quercus macrocarpa, Q. ellipsoidalis, and Populus tremuloides. Branching shrubs, to 8 feet tall (though most considerably short than this).
Associates include Vitis riparia, Parthenocissus inserta, Toxicodendron rydbergii.
