Local, occasional on a bedrock knob atop a 250-foot ridge overlooking the lower reaches of the Swamp River. Loose patches totaling several dozen plants in thin soil over sloping diabase bedrock. Rather dry exposed settings. Full sun to partial shade of scattered short and open-grown Pinus banksiana and P. strobus.
Associates include Diervilla lonicera, Amelanchier spicata, Poa pratensis, Oryzopsis pungens, Potentilla norvegica, Sisyrinchium montanum. Also growing with Carex abdita in a partially shaded setting on middle ledges of the 60-foot northeast-facing cliff immediately below.
