Habitat:
Uncommon and quite local on a bedrock knob atop a 250-foot ridge overlooking the lower reaches of the Swamp River. A dozen or so scattered clumps in shallow soil over sloping diabase bedrock. Rather dry, exposed settings. Full sun.

Associates include Juniperus communis, Amelanchier spicata, Oryzopsis pungens, Poa pratensis, P. compressa, Danthonia spicata, Agrostis scabra, Potentilla norvegica, Corydalis sempervirens, Cardamine parviflora, Woodsia ilvensis, Arabis pycnocarpa.
