Locality: United States, Minnesota, Cook, Rugged bedrock terrain along the Border Route Hiking Trail, above the lower reaches of the Swamp River 11 miles north of Hovland. T64N R4E NW1/4 of NE1/4 of NE1/4 Sec. 28 (irregular Section)

Habitat: Occasional on 40- to 80-foot, north-facing, diabase cliffs on the upper portion of a 250-foot ridge. Several dozen plants in loose patches on rather broad, sloping, lower and mid-cliff ledges. Often in thick mats of Hylocomium splendens, Polytrichum sp., and other mosses. Shaded by Sorbus decora, Acer spicatum, and Betula papyrifera rooted on adjacent ledges.

Associated Taxa: Associates include Thelypteris phegopteris, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Cornus canadensis, Pyrola asarifolia, Maianthemum canadense, Carex peckii, Viburnum edule, Ribes glandulosum, Alnus viridis.
