Habitat:
Frequent along ~1/4-mile segment of large northeast- to north-facing cliffs that rise 40 to 100 feet on the upper portion of an extremely steep 330-foot slope. In thin soil and fine rock rubble on narrow ledges and along crevices of the rather unstable sedimentary bedrock (Rove Formation) that constitutes all but the upper portions of this cliff. Shaded to sunny settings. Forming loose clumps. Plants green colored.

Associates include Calamagrostis purpurascens, Agrostis scabra, Woodsia ilvensis, Campanula rotundifolia, Heuchera richardsonii, Saxifraga virginiensis, S. paniculata.
