Habitat:
Rare on lower to mid-portion of 50- to 120-foot+ north-facing cliffs. On thinly bedded Rove Formation sedimentary rocks on lower portions of the cliff, and on diabase higher up. In thick mats of Hylocomium splendens on shaded narrow ledges. Cliff partially to fully shaded by its aspect and by trees on ledges and in the adjacent forest; these include Thuja occidentalis, Betula papyrifera, B. cordifolia, Sorbus decora, and Picea glauca.
Associated Species:
Associates include Woodsia ilvensis, W. scopulina, Cystopteris fragilis, Polypodium virginianum, Heuchera richardsonii, Saxifraga virginiensis, Achillea millefolium, Poa glauca.
