Habitat:
Local on 40- to 60-foot, north-facing, diabase cliffs on the upper portion of a 250-foot ridge. Uncommon, widely scattered clumps on lower to mid-cliff ledges. Rooted in moss mats; rock beneath mosses is often cool and moist. Shaded below Betula papyrifera, Thuja occidentalis, and Alnus viridis.
