Uncommon and local on the lower portion of the extremely steep north-facing slope of a 180-foot bedrock ridge west of the mouth of the Swamp River. Scattered clumps in mats of Polytrichum sp., Hylocomium splendens, and other mosses on the rather moist and steeply-sloping cliff face. Partial sun to full shade of Thuja occidentalis, Betula papyrifera, B. cordifolia, and Picea mariana growing above and below the cliff, and on adjacent portions of the cliff face.
Associates include Huperzia appalachiana, Woodsia ilvensis, Gymnocarpium dryopteris.
