Habitat: Uncommon on the mid- to upper portion of an extremely steep, 250-foot, north-facing slope. Scattered plants on mossy ledges of rather unstable sedimentary bedrock (Rove Formation) in a transitional area where the large sheer cliff to the east becomes discontinuous and broken. Shaded beneath Betula papyrifera, Picea glauca, and Sorbus decora. Low shrubs, to 36 inches tall.
Associated Species: Associates include Ribes glandulosum, R. oxyacanthoides, Alnus viridis, Acer spicatum, Rubus strigosus, Abies balsamea, Thuja occidentalis, Trientalis borealis, Dryopteris fragrans, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Polypodium virginianum.
