Habitat: Infrequent on mossy lower ledges of 50- to 100-foot, north-facing, diorite cliffs on the extremely steep upper slope of the mountain. Scattered small clumps in shaded settings; beneath Thuja occidentalis, Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, B. cordifolia, Sorbus decora, and Acer spicatum.

Associated Taxa: Associates include Huperzia protoporophila, Polypodium virginianum, Woodsia ilvensis, Cystopteris fragilis, Campanula rotundifolia, Aquilegia canadensis, Saxifraga paniculata, Fragaria virginiana.
