Uncommon on mossy lower ledges of 50- to 100-foot, north-facing, diorite cliffs on the extremely steep upper slope of the mountain. Scattered small clumps in shaded settings; beneath Thuja occidentalis, Abies balsamea, Betula papyrifera, B. cordifolia, Sorbus decora, and Acer spicatum. [det.
