Local, occasional on outcrops of diorite bedrock, above east-facing cliffs on the extremely steep upper slope of the mountain. In thin and rather dry silty soil over sloping bedrock. Mostly in full sun (to partially shaded by shrubs including Amelanchier sp.).
Associates include Sibbaldiopsis tridentata, Woodsia ilvensis, Antennaria sp., Achillea millefolium, Saxifraga virginiensis, Carex backii, C. abdita, Poa glauca, Diervilla lonicera.
