Uncommon and local on a 40-foot, north-facing cliff on the upper portion of the very steep, 450-foot slope above Royal Lake. Patchy canopy dominated by Thuja occidentalis, with scattered Sorbus decora and Betula papyrifera. The lower 1/3 to 1/2 of this mesic cliff is Sedimentary (Rove Formation) bedrock; the upper portion is diabase. A dozen or so small clumps on shaded lower ledges. Often growing in mats of Pleurozium schreberi, Hylocomium splendens, Polytrichum sp., and other mosses.
Associates include Campanula rotundifolia, Polypodium virginianum, Woodsia ilvensis, Diervilla lonicera.
