Habitat: Local on the upper portion of the very steep, 450-foot slope above Royal Lake. Infrequent to occasional, small loose patches on lower to upper ledges of 60- to 75-foot, northeast-facing cliffs. On both the sedimentary (Rove Formation) bedrock on the lower third of these shaded mesic cliffs and on the diabase above.

Associated Taxa: Associates include Maianthemum canadense, Heuchera richardsonii, Pyrola secunda, Achillea millefolium, Solidago hispida, Corydalis aurea, Chimaphila umbellata, Saxifraga paniculata, Potentilla norvegica, Woodsia ilvensis, W. scopulina, Poa glauca, Carex foenea.
