Habitat:
Local on the lower portion of fairly steep, 260-foot, northeast facing bluff on the west side of White Rock Trail, south of Hwy 19. Rather dense small patches in mesic hardwood forest, recently selectively salvage-logged (post-windthrow). Partial shade of Acer saccharum, Tilia americana, and Fraxinus nigra. Understory of Staphylea trifolia and Carya cordiformis. Compacted loam.

Associates include Carex hirtifolia, Oryzopsis racemosa, Elymus hystrix, Hydrophyllum appendiculatum, H. virginianum, Isopyrum biternatum, Adiantum pedatum, Athyrium angustum, Matteuccia struthiopteris, Ribes cynosbati.
