Locally common in dry barrens prairie and sand savanna on stabilized dunes. Mostly in full sun; some in partial shade of Juniperus virginiana and Quercus macrocarpa. Fine sand with little organic matter. Several thousand plants here, in level to sloping settings.
Associates include Carex heliophila, C. siccata, Schizachrium scoparium, Stipa spartea, Koeleria macrantha, Sporobolus cryptandrus, Poa pratensis, Artemisia frigida, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Hedeoma hispida, Geum triflorum, Selaginella rupestris, Amorpha canescens.
