Habitat: Locally common in dry barrens prairie and sand savanna on stabilized dunes. Mostly in full sun; some in partial shade of Juniperus virginiana and Quercus macrocarpa. Fine sand with little organic matter. Several thousand plants here, in level to sloping settings.
Associated Species: Associates include Carex heliophila, C. siccata, Schizachrium scoparium, Stipa spartea, Koeleria macrantha, Sporobolus cryptandrus, Poa pratensis, Artemisia frigida, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Hedeoma hispida, Geum triflorum, Selaginella rupestris, Amorpha canescens.
