Habitat: Uncommon on ledges of 30- to 70-foot, northeast- to north-facing basalt cliffs on the steep upper portion of a 160-foot bedrock hill. Shaded beneath Betula cordifolia, B. papyrifera, Picea glauca, Acer spicatum, and Sorbus decora. A few dozen scattered clumps in thin organic detritus and moss mats (Hylacomnium splendens, Polytrichum sp.).
Associated Species: Additional associates include Carex deflexa, C. arctata, Prenanthes alba, Gymnocarpium jessoense, Cystopteris fragilis, Woodsia ilvensis, Huperzia selago, Rubus strigosus.
